Nonverbal Communication Before going over the slides and watching the documentary on nonverbal communication I never knew how important it is in our everyday life. I was aware of general signs like eye rolls, smiling, looking down, but I never realized things such as handshakes and back pats had such an impact on the message being portrayed. This chapter had definitely taught me some things that will benefit me immensely in my future career as well as my everyday life from now on. What I found most surprising about nonverbal communication was mentioned in the video; only 7% of communication is verbal. I never knew that our posture, gestures, tone of voice, pitch, and expressions tell so much about what we really want to say. I knew that body language had a part in our communication, but I never realized how big of a part it played. One of the most important things I learned was that nonverbal cues differ depending on the culture. It was mentioned in the documentary how people in the middle east tend to talk right in front of people, where as in America that can mean that a fight is about to happen. Marines were punching â€Å"Arabs† because they though they were talking in their face with anger when they were just simple talking. The cultural aspect of nonverbal communication is something people don’t tend to think about, which can become a crucial mistake.
